Tuart Trees in Perth — An Iconic WA Forest Giant

The Tuart (Eucalyptus gomphocephala), known to Noongar people as Tuart or Tooart, is one of the most significant and beloved native trees of Western Australia — and one of the six forest giants of southwest WA. Endemic to a narrow coastal corridor of the Swan Coastal Plain from Yanchep south to Busselton, it's a genuinely local Perth tree that has shaped the coastal landscape of WA for thousands of years. Now a protected species due to historical over-logging, planting a Tuart is a meaningful contribution to the conservation of one of WA's most iconic native trees.

A Magnificent Tree with Outstanding Wildlife Value

The Tuart is a large, impressive evergreen tree with a well-developed crown of fairly dense, wide-spreading branches — developing the broad, characterful form that makes mature Tuarts so visually striking in Perth's coastal landscape. The rough, box-like grey bark adds year-round texture, while the glossy light-green lanceolate foliage provides dense shade through the warmer months.

From summer through autumn the Tuart produces creamy-white flowers that are a magnet for native wildlife — particularly Carnaby's Black Cockatoos, which use Tuart trees for food, nesting, and roosting. Planting a Tuart is one of the most meaningful things a Perth gardener can do for WA's threatened wildlife, providing critical habitat for these iconic birds as urban bushland continues to diminish.

Built for Perth's Coastal Conditions

The Tuart is naturally adapted to Perth's sandy coastal soils, often over limestone, in sunny positions across the Swan Coastal Plain. It's drought hardy and waterwise once established — requiring no supplementary watering once settled in — and moderately tolerant of salt-laden coastal winds. It needs no fertiliser, as it's perfectly adapted to WA's naturally low-nutrient soils.

In garden situations it typically reaches 25 metres tall with a broad spreading crown up to 15 metres wide — making it a substantial tree best suited to large Perth gardens, parks, wide street verges, and coastal properties where it has room to develop its full majestic form.

Growing Tuart in Perth

Plant young trees in autumn before the winter rains. The Tuart thrives in Perth's sandy coastal soils and requires no special soil preparation beyond removing weeds and adding some compost at planting time. Water while establishing, then reduce — mature Tuarts are completely drought hardy and require no supplementary watering.

No fertiliser is needed or recommended — Tuarts are adapted to WA's low-nutrient soils and excess nutrients can be harmful. Pruning is generally not required as the natural growth habit is attractive. Check with Water Corporation before planting regarding root invasiveness near pipes and structures.
