Banksia integrifolia ‘Roller Coaster’ Grafted Standard – Weeping Native Feature Tree for Perth Gardens
Banksia integrifolia ‘Roller Coaster’ Grafted Standard is a distinctive Australian native feature tree, combining the naturally cascading growth of Roller Coaster Banksia with the elegant structure of a grafted standard. Its flowing branches, silver-backed foliage, and golden-yellow Banksia flowers create a striking ornamental display in Perth gardens.
Unlike the traditional groundcover form, this variety is grafted onto an upright trunk, allowing its branches to form a graceful, umbrella-shaped canopy. The result is a sculptural feature tree ideal for contemporary landscapes, coastal properties, courtyards, and feature planting.
Hardy, evergreen, and well suited to Perth's sandy soils and coastal conditions, Banksia ‘Roller Coaster’ offers a unique alternative to conventional ornamental trees.
A Unique Weeping Native with Year-Round Appeal
The standout feature of Banksia ‘Roller Coaster’ Grafted Standard is its elegant weeping canopy. Branches spread outward before cascading downward, creating a natural flowing shape that becomes increasingly attractive as the tree matures.
Its dark green foliage features distinctive silvery-white undersides, adding texture and movement to the landscape.
Established plants can produce golden-yellow Banksia flower spikes, primarily from autumn through spring. These nectar-rich blooms attract honeyeaters, bees, and other beneficial pollinators, making this variety an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens.
The elevated canopy makes it particularly effective as a standalone feature, beside entrances, or within structured garden designs.
Exceptional Performance in Perth Gardens
Banksia integrifolia ‘Roller Coaster’ is well adapted to Western Australia's coastal environment, tolerating sandy soils, salt-laden winds, and strong sun exposure.
Once established, it offers good drought tolerance and relatively low maintenance requirements, making it suitable for waterwise gardens and residential landscapes throughout Perth.
Its compact standard form provides strong visual impact without the height of a conventional Coast Banksia tree.

Growing Banksia ‘Roller Coaster’ Grafted Standard in Perth
Plant in full sun in well-drained soil. Perth's sandy soils are generally suitable, provided drainage is adequate.
Water regularly during establishment, particularly throughout the first summer. Once established, occasional deep watering during extended dry periods is generally sufficient.
Avoid high-phosphorus fertilisers, as Banksias are sensitive to phosphorus toxicity. Apply a suitable low-phosphorus native fertiliser only when required.
Light pruning after flowering will help maintain a balanced canopy and encourage denser growth. Remove any shoots developing below the graft union.
Provide suitable staking during establishment, particularly in exposed coastal locations, to protect the trunk and graft union from excessive movement.
