Marri Trees in Perth — An Iconic WA Native for Large Gardens

The Marri (Corymbia calophylla), also commonly known as Red Gum, is one of the most beloved and iconic native trees of southwest Western Australia. Endemic to the southwest corner of WA — from Port Gregory near the Murchison River south and east through the jarrah and karri forests — it's a genuinely local tree that has shaped the landscape of WA for thousands of years and remains one of the most beautiful large native trees you can plant in a Perth garden.

A Spectacular WA Native Flowering Tree

In late spring through summer the Marri produces an extraordinary flower display — enormous terminal clusters of pearl-white blossoms that attract honeyeaters, native bees, and other wildlife in abundance. The flowers are followed by the tree's most distinctive feature — large, decorative urn-shaped seed pods that remain on the tree long after flowering, creating year-round structural interest and providing important habitat and food for native cockatoos and other wildlife.

The rough, grey-brown flaky bark and broad spreading crown give mature Marri trees a rugged, characterful presence that's unmistakably Western Australian — making them as beautiful in a large Perth garden as they are in their natural bushland setting.

A True WA Native for Perth Conditions

Being endemic to southwest WA means the Marri is perfectly adapted to Perth's Mediterranean climate — it handles Perth's hot dry summers, grows well in the sandy and laterite soils common across the Perth region, and is genuinely at home in WA conditions in a way that no exotic tree can match. It's a long-lived tree that becomes increasingly impressive with age.

At maturity it reaches 15 metres tall and 8 metres wide — making it a substantial tree best suited to large Perth garden blocks, open spaces, parks, and properties where it has room to develop its full spreading crown.

Growing Marri in Perth

Plant in full sun in well-drained soil. The Marri is well adapted to Perth's native sandy and laterite soils and handles Perth's dry summers reliably once established. Water regularly while establishing, then reduce as it becomes drought tolerant. Use a low-phosphorus native fertiliser if fertilising — like all proteaceous and related native trees it is sensitive to high phosphate levels.

It requires minimal maintenance once established — an occasional light prune to maintain clearance beneath the canopy is all that's needed. It's a long-lived, hardy tree that rewards patience with an increasingly impressive presence over the decades.
