Arbutus unedo
Arbutus unedo, commonly known as the Strawberry Tree, is a striking evergreen tree native to the Mediterranean. It features distinctive reddish-brown bark that naturally peels, adding year-round visual interest. Its dark green, glossy foliage forms a lush backdrop for delicate, bell-shaped white or pale pink flowers that bloom in autumn. Following the flowering period, the tree produces vibrant red, rough-textured fruits resembling strawberries, which are both ornamental and edible.
Growing to a moderate height of 5-10 meters with a rounded to spreading habit, the Strawberry Tree is highly versatile. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and adapts well to various conditions, including drought and coastal exposure. With its low-maintenance nature and ability to tolerate dry spells, this tree is an excellent choice for gardens, landscapes, and urban settings. Whether used as a feature tree, hedge, or for its ornamental fruit display, Arbutus unedo adds year-round beauty and resilience to any outdoor space.
